Real Madrid and Girona have been at it again, with Real's Santiago Solari leading the way as they beat Girona 2-1 to secure their first La Liga title since 2014.
Santiago Solari had been the driving force for Real throughout this season, scoring four goals including the winner against Girona on Sunday. The 28-year-old midfielder is known for his clinical finishing ability and his ability to create space for his teammates.
The game started well for Real, with Diego Costa and Xabi Alonso creating chances for Solari but were unable to convert them into goals. However, Girona goalkeeper Pedro Alarcón saved several crucial saves from Solari to keep the score level.
In the second half, Real continued to press Girona and were able to score through a header by Lucas Vazquez. But Solari scored the winning goal in stoppage time with a low shot that was deflected off the bar before hitting the back of the net.
"Both sides played extremely well," said Solari after the match. "It was a tough game, we did not play our best, but we fought hard and we deserved to win."
Girona coach José Luis Martínez praised his team's effort despite losing the game. "We lost some good players but I'm sure they will come back stronger next season," he added.
This victory comes just three days after Real Madrid beat Valencia 5-1 in the Copa del Rey final, which clinched the league title. And Solari has already declared himself as the new La Liga player of the year, with many predicting he could be the best player ever to wear Real Madrid's shirt.
As for the rest of the season, Real are expected to continue challenging for the championship, while Girona will look to bounce back from the defeat to Valencia. The two teams will face each other again in the Champions League on May 9th.
